The Limbo Between The Edgelands

The Limbo Between The Edgelands’ is about a journey through the modern English countryside. Drawing inspiration from the writings of W.G Sebald, the paintings of James McIntosh Patrick and photographic style of Andreas Gursky, I wanted to talk about the spaces between destinations.

If you have ever driven along a motorway or A-road or instead simply looked out of a train window whilst rattling along the track, you likely would’ve seen rows of trees and hedges and bushes fly past, all of them fading into one another. This greenery is planted on purpose to attempt to cover up what some would consider to be an eyesore. These lines of vegetation are called edgelands.

Sometimes though, this blurred green curtain opens and you get just a small, fleeting glimpse at the world that you are being hidden from. These gaps almost form a suspended state in your journey, a captivating limbo, that passes to quickly to been appreciated.

In these photographs, these limbo spaces are frozen. There is no more green curtain waiting to close in on your view. Its simply you and the uninterrupted scene of what stares back through these gaps in the green.
